Since I was little, the water has been my favorite place to be. Whether it was the beach, the lake, or the pool – I was happy. My parents saw my love for the water and had a pool built in our backyard – needless today, I was thrilled. When high school came around, it only made sense that I would be on the swim team. I tried out and made the varsity team as a freshman. I loved the sport so much that I enrolled in a local competitive swim club and extended my swim season for the rest of the year. As a sophomore, I made captain, and as a junior, I broke my first record. My time spent competitively swimming was invaluable. I had some wonderful coaches who taught me techniques that I still use when I’m swimming, as well as when I’m teaching my own lessons.
For nearly eight years now, I have truly enjoyed teaching swim lessons. I feel that being able to teach children and adults how to swim is an opportunity to greatly enhance their lives. Knowing how to swim is a skill from which anyone can benefit, for safety, recreation, or exercise – everyone should know how to swim. Regardless of age or ability, everyone can learn and improve. In my own lessons, I believe motivating students to reach their full potential, while having fun, is key. I think every student should leave a successful lesson feeling tired, proud, and always smiling.
When I’m not in the water, I am a full-time graduate student at Rider University. I have my B.A. in Psychology and will graduate in May 2010 with my Education Specialist degree in School Psychology. I have found that this background has greatly impacted my approach in working with children of all abilities. Working with children is something that I have always found to be pleasant and rewarding. I consider teaching swim lessons a privilege, and I would like the opportunity to work with you!
